I am a single mother of a 17 year old boy. I live in Mdantsane, East London.

Before I joined Taking Crae of Business (TCB), I was struggling financially because I was unemployed. The last time I saw the father of my child, my son was 9 years old. He was the one supporting us financially back then. After his passing things were very difficult and I was supported by my family and I lacked self-confidence.

I joined TCB in May 2024. Things have changed since I’ve joined TCB. I now have money of my own and am able to provide for my son. I’ve managed to send him to initiation school. We are no longer suffering and I’m saving money each and every month for him because he is doing matric and that money will assist him next year when he goes to university. There is also an improvement in my home because I’ve managed to change the furniture.

TCB has taught me business skills and how to handle my finances and how to budget. Before TCB, I was just using the money without budgeting but now I have more knowledge on how to spend money.

I am independent now, I can do things on my own, without asking for help. I am proud of the progress I have made since joining TCB.

Taking Care of Business (TCB) is a nonprofit social enterprise. We are empowering unemployed South Africans and their families to escape the cycle of poverty through small business opportunities, mostly within the circular economy.

How TCB’s Reskill programme is transforming youth skills development in South Africa

In the past year, nearly 2,000 people completed short, interactive courses in financial literacy, digital skills, entrepreneurship, and personal development. Unlike traditional training, Reskill combines technical skills with confidence, resilience, and mindset, creating transformation that lasts.
